Payback Time, Carl Deuker. Quarter 2, Cycle 12 reading response, pages 1-50.

            In the opening section I read of Payback Time, it describes the main character Mitch True. Mitch's real name is actually Danny, but everyone calls him Mitch because he looks like the Michelin tire man. Mitch is described as a short 5'4 high school senior who is over weight weighing in at about 200lb. Mitch was  never the most popular kid in school and wasn't the most athletic kid around. But the one thing that did interest Mitch and that he was good at was journalism. He worked for the school newspaper and was the lead writer for the school paper. However, a girl named Alyssa was chosen over him to be in charge of the school paper and she placed Mitch on the sports section of the paper. Mitch argued with this but soon found out maybe it wouldn't be so bad since sports did interest him.

            The author used his 6 traits well in describing the scene of the story and using voice and word usage to describe the characters and what their going through. For example, the author describes how round and flabby Mitch's stomach is an dhow he eats a lot everyday by describing what he eats and how much he eats everyday. The author used the 6 traits good and it helps to better understand the story.

            The author has framed and organized this part of the story to be an introduction to the story and describe the setting, the characters, and what they're going through in the story. This helps to give us a better understanding of what's going on and help us to see how it relates to the rest of the story. The reason for organizing it like this is to keep the story going and flowing smoothly and transition into each event smoothly.

3 Props For Oberon

Tiara

I am using a tiara for my character Oberon because he is known in the play as a fairy. The tiara shows that Oberon is a fairy because it is a mans tiara for a boy fairy who is married to another fairy. The tiara shows that he is a fairy because most fairies back then were known to be wearing a crown or tiara and have wings to fly around.

Red Flower

I'm using the flower because it is what Oberon orders Puck to bring to him to use as his special magic love potion to put on Titania's eyes to get revenge on her and make her fall in love with something bad. The flower helps to show it's a magic flower because its also red and red is the color you think of when you think of magical things.

Spray Bottle

The spray bottle helps to represent the flower juice Oberon gets from the magic flower Puck picks for him. The bottle has a piece of the red flower in it and some water to represent the juice from the water. The spray bottle is used to put the juice on Titania's eyes to make her fall in love with something bad like the ass headed Bottom.

            The character I am playing is Oberon. He is a fairy who is married to Titania, the other fairy. Oberon is in an argument with his wife Titania over a child, who he wants in his possession to raise as his follower. However, Titania wans to raise him herself because he is the child of her former best friend who recently passed away. Because he is furious at Titania, Oberon makes a plan to get the juice from a magical flower and turns it into a love potion. Oberon pours the juice over Titanias eyes while she is asleep and it makes her fall in love with the first thing she sees, which is a ass headed craftsman named Bottom. After seeing what he has done and feeling bad, Oberon reverses the spell on Titania and they get back together.

            My character is in Act 2 Scene 2, as Titania is falling asleep in the forest, Oberon sneaks up on her and puts the magic flower juice into her eyes and chants the spell to make her fall in love with the first person she sees. His objective is to mess with Titania and get revenge for the argument the two had earlier.

            Previous details from the text shows that Oberon is clearly displeased with what Titania is doing and wants to get revenge on her. Oberon says earlier in the play that he has come up with a plan to get back at her by putting the love juice in her eyes to make her fall in love with the first thing she sees. Then the act of Titania going into the forest and falling asleep and Oberon watching invisibly from the side shows that he is about to do something to get back at her. Oberon reaches his objective of getting back at her as she falls in love with an ass headed man. Earlier in the text, Oberon was described and played as a man who wants to get back at people and loves to cause mischief with his servant Puck.

Raise The Red Lantern, Su Tong. Qtr. 2, Cycle 10 Reading Response Pages 1-15

            In the beginning section of this book, a young girl named Lotus is arriving at Master Chen Zuoquian. Lotus was forced to marry Chen Zuoquian after her father committed suicide and she had no one to take care of her. Lotus is still very young, only 19 years old and having spent only 1 year in college. She arrives at the Chen household and soon learns that it is not as easy as it seems being married to a rich master who also happens to have 3 other wives.

            The author used the six traits good in this section like voice to easily describe the emotions of Lotus and the other women when she arrives to the house. The author uses her ideas and sentence fluency to smoothly write out the story in a way that makes sense from arrival of Lotus to her meeting everyone of the wives and children. She organizes her word choice to make sense and uses descriptive words to tell the story better.

            The author has structured this part of the book as an introduction to the story and introducing all the character of the story which is all the family members of the Chen household and Lotus. The author organizes it in order of time from the time Lotus arrives at the Chen house for the first time to the time she meets all the family  members in order of wives number like 1^st wife then the 2^nd wife and then the 3^rd. this helps to make the story flow more smoothly and helps us to focus better on the main events of the story to keep track of whats going on with Lotus.

Out of the Pocket, Bill Konigsberg. Qtr. 2, Cycle 9 Reading Response, pages 201-272

          In this last section of the book, Bobby has learned to live with being openly gay and has no problems at school, home, or on the football field with people knowing he's gay. There may be the occasional people who will call names or make fun of him, but Bobby knows it doesn't matter because he is who he is and shouldn't care what others think. Bobby's father is also recovering from having cancer and being sent to Arizona for treatment. So in this part of the book, it tells how Bobby is emotional when his father returns home cancer free and healthy. Bobby throws a welcome home party for his father too, inviting all the friends and even bringing his new boyfriend Bryan home to meet his parents. His parents are okay with Bryan and they all learn to get along together. This book teaches us to not be ashamed of who we are, but to be proud of ourselves and never let anyone hold us back from doing what we think is right.

         In this section and overall in this book, the author used the 6 traits well to explain and give us images of what's going on with Bobby during his senior year of high school. The author especially uses voice, word choice, and sentence fluency to convey the ideas he put into this story. I think the author also did a good job of organizing his thoughts in a way that makes the story make sense from Bobby being hesitant to coming out as openly gay to him becoming comfortable with people knowing he's gay.

         This book relates to the guiding question who am I, and how does language reflect identity because it shows you don't have to care about what others think, as long as you act yourself. This book tells us that as long as your yourself, the ones that truly care about you will accept you for who you are, and the ones who don't shouldn't be in your life anyway. This section of the story was a great way to show that Bobby knows who he is now, and that nothing is holding him back from being himself.

Out of the Pocket, Bill Konigsberg. Qtr. 2, Cycle 8 Reading Response, pages 147-200

            In this section of the book, everyone is beginning to accept that Bobby is gay and they are treating him like a regular person now. Bobby's boyfriend, Byran is helping him along the way to be proud of who he is and to not let anyone bring him down. On the football field however, when they went to play at a visiting teams field Bobby was called names such as faggot and gay boy and they put up a big sign saying no gays on the field. Bobby learned to ignore all the harsh comments given to him and to just play football the way he played even before people knew he was gay.

            The author uses voice in this section of the story because he has Bobby speak up for himself when people gave comments against gays that he disliked. He grew Bobby to become a mature man and to respect people even when they don't say the nicest things to him. The author organizes this so that it is the recovery process for bobby after becoming openly gay and mocked at, he is recovering to become the best person he can be even if he is gay. The authors choice of words and ideas help to create good sentence fluency in this part because it helps to fully describe how Bobby is doing in the book like when it says that Bobby is getting used to the face that people know he's gay.  I think the author used the 6 traits good and that it is helping to create a good story.

            The author has framed this part of the book as the recovery process of Bobby as he is now becoming more comfortable with people knowing he's gay. I noticed how the author has Bobby do a lot of things to ignore the people that still do ridicule him for being gay such as toning them out or just ignoring them as he plays in the football game. I think the reasons for this is to help create more of a story out of this Bobby being gay and to explain more in detail how Bobby is dealing with open gayness as he was not that comfortable with it in the beginning.
