Payback Time, Carl Deuker. Quarter 2, Cycle 12 reading response, pages 1-50.
In the opening section I read of Payback Time, it describes the main character Mitch True. Mitch's real name is actually Danny, but everyone calls him Mitch because he looks like the Michelin tire man. Mitch is described as a short 5'4 high school senior who is over weight weighing in at about 200lb. Mitch was  never the most popular kid in school and wasn't the most athletic kid around. But the one thing that did interest Mitch and that he was good at was journalism. He worked for the school newspaper and was the lead writer for the school paper. However, a girl named Alyssa was chosen over him to be in charge of the school paper and she placed Mitch on the sports section of the paper. Mitch argued with this but soon found out maybe it wouldn't be so bad since sports did interest him.
The author used his 6 traits well in describing the scene of the story and using voice and word usage to describe the characters and what their going through. For example, the author describes how round and flabby Mitch's stomach is an dhow he eats a lot everyday by describing what he eats and how much he eats everyday. The author used the 6 traits good and it helps to better understand the story.
The author has framed and organized this part of the story to be an introduction to the story and describe the setting, the characters, and what they're going through in the story. This helps to give us a better understanding of what's going on and help us to see how it relates to the rest of the story. The reason for organizing it like this is to keep the story going and flowing smoothly and transition into each event smoothly.

3 Props for Oberon

3 Props For Oberon

Tiara
I am using a tiara for my character Oberon because he is known in the play as a fairy. The tiara shows that Oberon is a fairy because it is a mans tiara for a boy fairy who is married to another fairy. The tiara shows that he is a fairy because most fairies back then were known to be wearing a crown or tiara and have wings to fly around.

Red Flower
I'm using the flower because it is what Oberon orders Puck to bring to him to use as his special magic love potion to put on Titania's eyes to get revenge on her and make her fall in love with something bad. The flower helps to show it's a magic flower because its also red and red is the color you think of when you think of magical things.

Spray Bottle
The spray bottle helps to represent the flower juice Oberon gets from the magic flower Puck picks for him. The bottle has a piece of the red flower in it and some water to represent the juice from the water. The spray bottle is used to put the juice on Titania's eyes to make her fall in love with something bad like the ass headed Bottom.

MND blog post: Oberon

MND Blog post

The character I am playing is Oberon. He is a fairy who is married to Titania, the other fairy. Oberon is in an argument with his wife Titania over a child, who he wants in his possession to raise as his follower. However, Titania wans to raise him herself because he is the child of her former best friend who recently passed away. Because he is furious at Titania, Oberon makes a plan to get the juice from a magical flower and turns it into a love potion. Oberon pours the juice over Titanias eyes while she is asleep and it makes her fall in love with the first thing she sees, which is a ass headed craftsman named Bottom. After seeing what he has done and feeling bad, Oberon reverses the spell on Titania and they get back together.
My character is in Act 2 Scene 2, as Titania is falling asleep in the forest, Oberon sneaks up on her and puts the magic flower juice into her eyes and chants the spell to make her fall in love with the first person she sees. His objective is to mess with Titania and get revenge for the argument the two had earlier.
Previous details from the text shows that Oberon is clearly displeased with what Titania is doing and wants to get revenge on her. Oberon says earlier in the play that he has come up with a plan to get back at her by putting the love juice in her eyes to make her fall in love with the first thing she sees. Then the act of Titania going into the forest and falling asleep and Oberon watching invisibly from the side shows that he is about to do something to get back at her. Oberon reaches his objective of getting back at her as she falls in love with an ass headed man. Earlier in the text, Oberon was described and played as a man who wants to get back at people and loves to cause mischief with his servant Puck.

Insult Poem

Insult Poem

Your fat and your selfish
You smell like dead fish.
You always smoke weed
And never done a good deed.
You're a puny onion-eyed maggot-pie
Who looks like they were raised in a pigsty.
And never will anyone like you
They hate every little thing you do.
So long as you're a dwarfish toad
I hope you get killed crossing a road.

Raise The Red Lantern, Su Tong. Qtr. 2, Cycle 10 Reading Response Pages 1-15

In the beginning section of this book, a young girl named Lotus is arriving at Master Chen Zuoquian. Lotus was forced to marry Chen Zuoquian after her father committed suicide and she had no one to take care of her. Lotus is still very young, only 19 years old and having spent only 1 year in college. She arrives at the Chen household and soon learns that it is not as easy as it seems being married to a rich master who also happens to have 3 other wives.
The author used the six traits good in this section like voice to easily describe the emotions of Lotus and the other women when she arrives to the house. The author uses her ideas and sentence fluency to smoothly write out the story in a way that makes sense from arrival of Lotus to her meeting everyone of the wives and children. She organizes her word choice to make sense and uses descriptive words to tell the story better.
The author has structured this part of the book as an introduction to the story and introducing all the character of the story which is all the family members of the Chen household and Lotus. The author organizes it in order of time from the time Lotus arrives at the Chen house for the first time to the time she meets all the family  members in order of wives number like 1st wife then the 2nd wife and then the 3rd. this helps to make the story flow more smoothly and helps us to focus better on the main events of the story to keep track of whats going on with Lotus.

Out of the Pocket, Bill Konigsberg. Qtr. 2, Cycle 9 Reading Response, pages 201-272

In this last section of the book, Bobby has learned to live with being openly gay and has no problems at school, home, or on the football field with people knowing he's gay. There may be the occasional people who will call names or make fun of him, but Bobby knows it doesn't matter because he is who he is and shouldn't care what others think. Bobby's father is also recovering from having cancer and being sent to Arizona for treatment. So in this part of the book, it tells how Bobby is emotional when his father returns home cancer free and healthy. Bobby throws a welcome home party for his father too, inviting all the friends and even bringing his new boyfriend Bryan home to meet his parents. His parents are okay with Bryan and they all learn to get along together. This book teaches us to not be ashamed of who we are, but to be proud of ourselves and never let anyone hold us back from doing what we think is right.
In this section and overall in this book, the author used the 6 traits well to explain and give us images of what's going on with Bobby during his senior year of high school. The author especially uses voice, word choice, and sentence fluency to convey the ideas he put into this story. I think the author also did a good job of organizing his thoughts in a way that makes the story make sense from Bobby being hesitant to coming out as openly gay to him becoming comfortable with people knowing he's gay.
This book relates to the guiding question who am I, and how does language reflect identity because it shows you don't have to care about what others think, as long as you act yourself. This book tells us that as long as your yourself, the ones that truly care about you will accept you for who you are, and the ones who don't shouldn't be in your life anyway. This section of the story was a great way to show that Bobby knows who he is now, and that nothing is holding him back from being himself.

Out of the Pocket, Bill Konigsberg. Qtr. 2, Cycle 8 Reading Response, pages 147-200

In this section of the book, everyone is beginning to accept that Bobby is gay and they are treating him like a regular person now. Bobby's boyfriend, Byran is helping him along the way to be proud of who he is and to not let anyone bring him down. On the football field however, when they went to play at a visiting teams field Bobby was called names such as faggot and gay boy and they put up a big sign saying no gays on the field. Bobby learned to ignore all the harsh comments given to him and to just play football the way he played even before people knew he was gay.
The author uses voice in this section of the story because he has Bobby speak up for himself when people gave comments against gays that he disliked. He grew Bobby to become a mature man and to respect people even when they don't say the nicest things to him. The author organizes this so that it is the recovery process for bobby after becoming openly gay and mocked at, he is recovering to become the best person he can be even if he is gay. The authors choice of words and ideas help to create good sentence fluency in this part because it helps to fully describe how Bobby is doing in the book like when it says that Bobby is getting used to the face that people know he's gay.  I think the author used the 6 traits good and that it is helping to create a good story.
The author has framed this part of the book as the recovery process of Bobby as he is now becoming more comfortable with people knowing he's gay. I noticed how the author has Bobby do a lot of things to ignore the people that still do ridicule him for being gay such as toning them out or just ignoring them as he plays in the football game. I think the reasons for this is to help create more of a story out of this Bobby being gay and to explain more in detail how Bobby is dealing with open gayness as he was not that comfortable with it in the beginning.

Shakespeare sonnet analysis

Sonnet (18): Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer day

By William Shakespeare

1.)  Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
2.)  Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
3.)  Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
4.)  And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed:
5.)  But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,
6.)  So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

If you like to read about love poems, then Shall I Compare Thee to a Summers Day by William Shakespeare would be good for you. It is written in a way that a man tells a woman how much he loves her beauty. Each thought in the sonnet is a different description. For example, Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art lovelier and more temperate means the person is more lovely and the actions they do is more temperate compared to a nice summer day.

The first thought "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate" is stating that you are lovelier and more outgoing than a summer day. A summer day is thought to be full of fun and joy and a time to relax in the nice warm sun. So by saying thou art more temperate and lovely when compared to a summer's day is like saying that the person is even more of a joy and more fun to be around.

The second thought "Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, and summer's lease hath all to short a date" is saying that winds shake the beloved buds of May, and summer is way too short. This means that summer comes and goes all too fast and before you know it, winter and spring is here when the winds are shaking the new buds of may. Just like summer being too short, it could be referring to how short ones love can be for another saying that their love for the person can come and go as fast and instantly as it may seem that summer goes.

The third thought "Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, and often his gold complexion dimmed" means that sometimes the eye of heaven, or the sun may shine too bright. And often its “gold complexion”, or the light it gives off, may be shaded or dimmed by the rolling clouds over head. This is relating to ones looks and complexion being beautiful and glowing like heavens shining sunlight, and then it may be dimmed or become uglier as something happens to the person that covers up the beautiful looks, just as the clouds do to the suns bright light.

The fourth thought in the sonnet "And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed" means that everything or everyone who is beautiful will get uglier over the course of time whether it be from randomness, or from age. This means that a woman can get uglier from randomness like something may happen to her from an accident. Or, the woman can get uglier from time and age, meaning with time always going on forever she is always aging. When people age, they may not always be beautiful so when it says "nature's changing course untrimmed" it means nature is changing her through time and her becoming ugly is a naturally occurring event.

The fifth thought "But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st, Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st" means that the persons youth or young person in them will not go away, nor will they lose the beauty they have, nor will death claim you as his, because she will forever be in his heart. This is the love part of the sonnet because it is saying no matter how ugly or old, the person will always love the woman and see her as young and beautiful. It is also saying he will not let death claim her as his own because he will forever be there with her and she will forever be in his heart.

The sixth thought saying "So long as men can breath, or eyes can see, so long lives this, and this gives life to thee" meaning so long as men are alive on this earth and can see, and so long as his love continues on like this, the love he has for her will give life to her forever. This means that as long as he loves her forever, it will give her spirit life even after she dies because she will always be thought of and will forever remain with him in his mind and thoughts because that is just how much his love for her has grown.

Out of the Pocket, Bill Konigsberg. Qtr. 1, Cycle 4 Reading Response, pages 196-146

In the section I just read, Bobby is getting used to the fact that he is in love with men. Bobby's friends, teammates, and even parents all know that he's gay and they are learning to accept that. Bobby also got a new boyfriend named Bryan. Bryan is a guy that loves Bobby and Bobby loves him back. Not everyone knows of Bryan yet, and Bobby thinks it may be too soon to tell people about him. Out on the football field, Bobby had trouble in his first game after being known as the gay quarterback. People were calling him names from the stands and his whole arm was shaking uncontrollably. Bobby eventually was taken out of the game and taken to the hospital where his father was because his father fainted at the game due to low blood pressure. Bobby is dealing with his father's sickness and his being openly gay and he is trying to balance his life out with all these new events being thrown at him.
The author organizes this part of the story as the main part where the problem Bobby is facing is in full effect and he is trying to get over the problem. The author put all different scenarios into this section of the story to emphasize how bad Bobby's life is going for him now, and is telling how Bobby is trying to fix and deal with it. The author uses good sentence fluency and talks as if he is the characters in the book to help the story move along smoothly and transition in between events.
This book relates the question who am and how does language or body reflect who I am because Bobby went out with a guy, he also tried his best to play in a big football game even though he was being heavily criticized for being gay. This shows that Bobby is a man with great character and is doing in what he believes in and how he feels. Bobby is shown to be a strong person in this book taking on any problems that area shown to him and trying his best to conquer those problems.

Out of the Pocket, Bill Konigsberg. Qtr. 1, Cycle 4 Reading Response, pages 104-195

-->
In the section I read, Bobby Framingham had made friends with the school newspaper reporter and told him his secret of being gay. The problem in this section though, is that the reporter betrayed Bobby after he had shared everything with him, and wrote a story about Bobby being gay and then shared the news with the press. Soon after the story was out, everyone knew Bobby was gay. It was on the news, the newspaper, the radio, and everywhere else where stories are written and shared. Bobby has to then choose whether to deny the story, or to live up to it and come out as gay. Bobby chooses to live up to the fact that he's gay but not everyone takes it so well. For example, his mother cannot believe her son is gay and tries to get Bobby to think he's not. Even his own teammates don't want him on the team any more because he's gay and they don't want a gay guy touching the centers ass or showering in the same room as all the other guys. This is what Bobby must fight against and stick to the way he is by ignoring what others may think of him.
The author organizes this part of the book so that it is in order of events and its like cause and effect. Bobby shares that he's gay, the reporter spreads it to the world, and Bobby then has to deal with the gay comments thrown at him. The author uses good ideas to describe how people think of Bobby since he's gay like his team thinks he's going to do gay things in the showers now just because they found out he's gay. The author uses good sentence fluency to lead from one event to the next and keep the story flowing smoothly.
This book relates to the guiding questions for English I: Who am I, and how does language shape and/or reflect identity because it is telling how Bobby knows he's gay, and he's reflecting his maturity by taking the gay comments thrown at him and not retaliating to them. Bobby knows that he likes men, and he doesn't try to fight it because he knows that's just who he is and that's how he always will be.

Out of the Pocket, Bill Konigsberg. Qtr. 1, Cycle 4 Reading Response, 53-103.

In the section I read, it described how Bobby Framingham and his friends took the news that Bobby was gay. It told how Bobby's friends as well as his counselor for school accepted the fact that Bobby was gay. However, Bobby still didn't know how to explain to his parents or coaches that he was gay. Bobby is also frustrated that no one understood what his situation was that he didn’t want him coming out as gay to  be a big deal to everyone but at the same time he needed to tell people to get it off his back.
The author uses the six traits to explain how Bobby is going through his problem. He also uses the six traits to explain things like the football games that Bobby plays in, or what's going on in school for Bobby. For example, the author organizes the story like a full of week of school where Bobby goes to school, practices after school, and prepares for the big games on the weekends so its all in chronological order of what happens during the week in Bobby's week.
During this section of the book, I noticed that he organized the story to tell how Bobby is trying to deal with people knowing he's gay, after just recently in the last section telling people that he's gay. I think the author structured this section good because he really made it feel like we were there and going through time with Bobby taking one step of the problem at a time. I think the effect the author is trying to send out is to let us feel how Bobby is feeling and try to see how this is affecting Bobby and how it would feel if it was us with his problem.

To David, About his Education
By Howard Nemerov

The world is full of invisible things,
always changing your life.
You wake up in the morning and get a text,
that may change your plans from one thing to the next.
You try your best,
to be like the rest.
But you cannot see,
what the future may be.
Because the world is full of invisible things.

Poetry Scavenger Hunt

1. A blind Fisherman By Stanley Moss

He could not fish, he could not walk, he fell
in his own feces. He wept. He died where he fell.

This passage can relate to the situation where life presents difficulties or challenges because these lines are about a blind man who cannot see what he's doing or where he's going. This blind man has the challenge of going about his life without knowing where he's going or being able to see what he's doing and it relates to how life presents itself with difficulties or challenges.

2. The last laugh By Wilfred Owen

‘O Jesus Christ! I’m hit,’ he said; and died.

This line from the poem The last laugh relates to the second topic because the day you die is a very big milestone, even though your not there to see yourself die. Your death day is just as important as the day your born because it is the day you leave this world, just like how it was celebrated when you came into this world.

3. Mother explains heaven to dying son By Pamela A. Snow

Please give me the words, O Lord, and
let me say them with a smile...

This line relates to the third topic about a toast or prayer because it is about a mother calling to god in prayer to let her son be welcomed into heaven when he dies.

4. Marry me again? By Michelle Gauci

I think back to the day
of when we said "I Do"

These lines relate to the topic of marriage or relationship because it is about a man trying to propose to a woman again after they got a divorce and he's thinking back to the day he said "I do" the first marriage.

5. To be the best By Eric Roth

To be the best you see…..
Be the best that you can be…..
These lines relate to the topic of motivation or leading an audience because it is giving advice on how to be a good person and  persuade you to be the best person you can be.

Out of the Pocket, Bill Konigsberg. Qtr. 1, Cycle 3 Reading Response, 1-52.

In the section I read from the book Out of the Pocket, it gave an introduction of the story. The main character, Bobby Framingham, is a star quarterback at his high school in California. Bobby has everything anyone would want. He's a star athlete, he's popular, and he even got the prettiest girl in school to like him. The problem with Bobby however, is that he's gay and is afraid to admit it. Bobby thinks coming out as gay to the world will create problems for his future career in sports and thinks he will be made fun of in school. So, he tries to cover up by making excuses every time a girl wants to do something with him, or why he always wants to be with guys. He thinks his problem is only getting worse because at night in his dreams, it's of guys undressing and being with him.
In this book, the author Bill Konigsberg is trying to make the setting of the story as realistic as possible. The main setting is at the high school that Bobby goes to, and he's trying to create a real life setting of a high school in modern day. He puts in a couple swear words where most people like us would use them, he has people making gay and racial jokes, and he talks about people liking each other and the other things people our age talk about. The author uses the six traits to explain about Bobby's problem as being a gay all state high school quarterback and probably one of the top prospects in the country. The author gives us visualizations of what's going on with Bobby, he tells us what Bobby's thinking, and how Bobby is trying to deal with this problem.
The author has structured this part of the story to give us an introduction to the story. He's told us the main problem, which is Bobby being gay and not knowing how to come out to the world with this. The writer has crafted his writing to make it like a real high school students life. Swearing, gay jokes, football, and friends all make his writing come to life as a real setting. The purpose behind this effect is to give us an idea of how the people and place Bobby is in is like. It tells us how Bobby feels, and how we may feel if our friends knew we were gay and if they would understand, or make fun of us.

Riddle

Riddle Poem Assignment

I find space on the side of the road to sit,
I wear clothes all the time that barely fit.
My beard is as long as a foot,
And I often use things that I took.
I ride on buses to get around,
And cash in cans and bottles I found.
I walk along highways all day and night,
I look like a mess, an ugly sight.
I'm a vagabond, wheeling around a grocery cart,
I often sleep on the side of Walmart.

SAT prep essay

In the world we live in today, I think everyone needs to have a network or a family. A family is a group of people who care about you and take care of you. It doesn’t have to be your birth parents or siblings to make a family, it can be anyone who you think loves you and is close to you. I think we need a family or network because they are the ones who help us through happy or sad times, they are the ones who help to support us in whatever our goals may be, and they are the ones who take care of us and give us someone to talk to.
Families help each other out in a lot of ways. One way is that families help each other get through happy, sad, good, or bad times in our life. Without a family, there is no one out there who is going to care about you and help you more than a family would. There may be random strangers who might ask if your ok when you look sad, but a family is going to help you to make the bad points of your life turn into something good, and the good points in life stay good.
Families support you no matter what. If you’re a kid and plan on going to college as one of your goals in life, your family is going to have your back and help to pay tuition and transport you to that college. Families are always supportive of each other no matter what. Without a family, there is no way you can reach your goals, or it may be very hard to do so without them. A family is what helps you to be successful in life, and you need them to survive and live through this tough world of every man for himself.
Lastly, families take care of you. If you’re a homeless guy, with no food or shelter, barely any clothes, and no place to sleep at night, that is probably because he has no family to take care of him. A family can provide you with food, shelter, clothes, and each other. It is important to have each other in a family because it gives you someone to talk to, to listen to, and to share ideas with. I always here homeless people with no families talking to themselves and I think that its because they have no one to talk to. Family members are often times your best friend. They have your back and will help you out in any way that they can, and I think that’s why it is important to have a family or network.

Football free choice writing 1

First time football
This summer was my first time playing football. It was a lot of work. It was lots of learning, defending, and A LOT of running. Now that the season started and we're practicing everyday, my whole day is just school, football, homework, and sleep. The first two preseason games I found out what its like to be able to hit someone. I found out that when you wear pads and hit someone as hard as you can, you don’t get hurt at all. The facemask and helmet is where I get hit and hit people with the most. I like this sport a lot more than basketball now because there's not as much skill needed like being able to shoot a basketball or dribble the ball. Football is just straight up running and knocking the guy on his ass. I chose to play defense because your the one who's hitting people. No ones trying to take you to the ground its you that does all the tackling. This sport is a lot of fun because it’s the only time in the world that you can hit someone as hard as you want and not get in trouble or be sent to jail. It also can prove how tough you are and how much you want to actually hit someone. I want to continue football as long as I can and try to keep getting better at it. Football is what got me to make friends at this new school. If I didn’t play during the summer I would only know a couple people here and I'd be a loner.
